How to Generate Cloze Questions from Definitions: A Syntactic Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper discusses the implementation and evaluation of automatically generated cloze questions in the style of the definitions found in Collins COBUILD English language learner’s dictionary. The definitions and the cloze questions are used in an automated reading tutor to help second and third grade students learn new vocabulary. A parser provides syntactic phrase structure trees for the definitions. With these parse trees as input, a pattern matching program uses a set of syntactic patterns to extract the phrases that make up the cloze question answers and distracters.

A Selection Strategy to Improve Cloze Question Quality
We present a strategy to improve the quality of automatically generated cloze and open cloze questions which are used by the REAP tutoring system for assessment in the ill-defined domain of English as a Second Language vocabulary learning. Cloze and open cloze questions are fill-in-the-blank questions with and without multiple choice, respectively. The REAP intelligent tutoring system [1] uses ...
متن کاملFiltering-based automatic cloze test generation
We propose a method to generate high-quality cloze test questions using a computational approach. Previous methods for automatic cloze test generation have contained some problems; specifically, there can be multiple correct answers. We found that approximately 50% of the generated answers have such errors with previous methods, which requires human post-editing was necessary in previous resear...
متن کاملSemi-automatic generation of cloze question distractors effect of students' L1
We describe a method to semi-automatically generate incorrect choices, or distractors, for cloze (fill-in-the-blank) questions. We generated distractors aimed at revealing what type of misunderstanding a student was having. English as a Second Language learners answered a series of cloze questions that presented distractors generated by our method. We analyzed their answers in order to see how ...
متن کاملUsing Automated Questions to Assess Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Effects of Tutorial Interventions
We describe the automated generation and use of 69,326 comprehension cloze questions and 5,668 vocabulary matching questions in the 2001-2002 version of Project LISTEN’s Reading Tutor used by 364 students in grades 1-9 at seven schools. To validate our methods, we used students’ performance on these multiple-choice questions to predict their scores on the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test. A model ...

Processability Theory, a component of the cognitive approach to second language acquisition tries to enhance understanding of how the interlanguage knowledge systems can be restructured by second language learners (Pienemann, 1998, 2015). The present study intended to run a similar investigation into the syntactic development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL learners based on ...
